Pre-emptive Modding

Posted by Emma - April 18th, 2012

For the first time ever, a thread was locked for what it MIGHT become! We should celebrate.

I'll get the Red Wine.

Great choice!

well actually it did become what deckheadtottie thought it would be, so it wasn't preemptive at all

it doesn't help that you pass sweeping judgments about a segment of the american population that serves in the military. that's intellectually lazy and frankly i'm surprised that you don't seem to anticipate hostile responses from the community on the bbs

oh sure you can write it off as textbook immaturity, but it speaks volumes that so many people on the forum who happen to be politically left-of-center treat you with nearly immeasurable disdain because of the tone that you convey when you either make threads about atrocities committed by members of the u.s. armed forces or post in those threads that are made by others. negatively judging an entire population because a few of its members committed heinous crimes is downright stupid

yeah, the general forum is pretty rough around the edges, but i'm curious as to whether or not you ever stop to ask why you consistently elicit strong and negative reactions from the bbs with your threads, and to a lesser degree to your posts

it may be due in part to your inclination to express opinions in an uncompromising manner.

It still had some time to spiral downwards!

Actually I mistyped something in a previous thread and it was blown way out of proportion. So I don't even bother arguing with it, I just throw fuel on the fire.

I've never judged entire populations EVER.

I get negative reactions in my threads because I have a bad track record. I guarantee if I made a new account that was an atheist male, there wouldn't be any problems from DickFag and travis.

Probably that too :3

Eh, some of the stuff that you posted in past was pretty stupid but it was wrong of people to bring it up again unnecessarily. You had some good points in that thread.

Dickbuns is a major ass, his debate tactic is to be extremely aggressive and if that doesn't work he resorts to ad hominems until the other person either gives up or makes a mistake. If you corner him about it, he backs into a corner and talks down to you, pretending that he's a perfect angel and that he simply doesn't understand what your saying because your such a child or whatever.

Make sense lol?

Yep, that pretty much sums it up nicely :)

"It still had some time to spiral downwards!"

it already declined to shit when deckheadtottie locked it. thatt's essentially indisputable

"Actually I mistyped something in a previous thread and it was blown way out of proportion. So I don't even bother arguing with it, I just throw fuel on the fire."

yeah you could easily correct what you said in a subsequent post

"I've never judged entire populations EVER."

i'd have to say that declaring your contempt for the u.s. military on more than one occasion, as well as the individuals who serve in it, is an unequivocal judgment passed on an entire population.

expressing feelings of disdain for 1 million+ people because you disapproved of the crimes committed by a select few is as judgmental as it gets

"I get negative reactions in my threads because I have a bad track record. "

a bad record which you keep adding on to.

"I guarantee if I made a new account that was an atheist male, there wouldn't be any problems from DickFag and travis."

no, your attitude would permeate your posts and you would be castigated from all sides anyway. unless you decide to change the way you post, i guarantee that *this* will happen.

No I was actually taking the Tony guy's posts seriously after his first two. It COULD have worked!

I did try to clarify, but it went over their heads and lasted +10 pages >:(. It wasn't that single incident alone that gave me my opinion of the military.

Well, most of the time I didn't mean for that to happen. But now I'm perfectly fine with pissing them off. Serious discussions are futile on NG lol

i never once said that you predicated your opinion of the military on one incident

but hey, i'll give you one chance to redeem yourself by asking you a few simple questions in the hope that i am horribly wrong about you:

1. do you generally respect those who served in the armed forces?

2. do you generally respect those who see combat?

3. can your beliefs best be described as "i support the troops, but not the war"?

4. if you don't respect those who serve in the armed forces, why?

5. if you don't respect those who see combat, why?

6. do you view enlistment in the military as an implicit act of approval of u.s. foreign policy?

1. Served as in a veteran of a past war? Yes, generally. Most past conflicts have been just.

2. Sort of a loaded question. I don't respect someone simply because they get in a firefight.

3. I support individuals, not the military or the war. So, the "soldiers" not the "troops".

4. Those I don't respect are usually those who still support the war and knowingly fight for imperialism and oppression. And, also those who make statements like "if you aren't behind us, feel free to stand in front of us" when they are supposed to be protecting the freedom of speech.

5. Because simply getting into a fight does not mean I am led to respect you. There are "good guys" and "bad guys". America isn't always the "good guy".

6. Yes if you are educated about it (which you should be if you're enlisting, right?)
____

The American military has really become some sort of cult where the mere mention of something it is doing or has done wrong means you are a traitor and unfit to be a citizen. The over-patriotism for this country which is NO BETTER than any other country is akin to the Germans prior to and during WWII. Being a soldier does not entitle you to respect. It's COMPLETELY a matter of what you are fighting for. And currently, no soldier is fighting for my freedom or national security.

yeeeeeeeeeah

and ya wonder why you're disliked on the bbs

Because nobody is able to place themselves in the shoes of other cultures, and everyone is too soft when it comes to the military.

Also, all this obsession with receiving respect and admiration from the people you are supposed to be protecting is getting to their heads. This isn't the case with all of them, but its like a desperation for honor. And, that shouldn't be what they are fighting for.
